Graduate level college classes may be as close as your campus! There are a variety of courses being delivered around the region this semester for the newest RETN member, Midwestern State University. These include required coursework for the following programs:

  • Superintendent Certification
  • Principal Certification (a new cohort begins Spring, '07)
  • Counseling

Rusty Brawley, previously with Alvord ISD, was especially grateful for the opportunity to receive courses in his district. "You guys do a great job of providing to me a valuable service.  Without the job that you are doing I would not be able to get my Master's.  There is absolutely no way I could afford to drive nor would I be able to have the time.  This opportunity is due to the job that the staff at Region XI is doing," Rusty said.

Memorial Day Celebration

Several districts from across the region joined together last May in an early Memorial Day Celebration to thank American soldiers serving in Iraq. Students performed songs, wrote poems, designed thank you cards, and asked soldiers a variety of questions regarding their lives as soldiers. Sgt. Lisa Hamm, responsible for connecting the event at Taji, Iraq, was impressed with this moving project. “We had a blast with the connections to the schools. It makes the soldier's day to connect to the kids and see how many of them know what’s going on over here,” Hamm said. Future connections with the soldiers are being planned, so watch for more information. Contact Gerri Maglia at (817) 740-3607 or gmaglia@esc11.net for more information regarding upcoming projects.

Content Programs Impact Students

According to Anne Herndon, Assistant Director, School Services at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, participating schools often provide fantastic feedback about the programs the FWMSH staff have created for distance learning. Susan Gentry, Granbury ISD said, "What a wonder!  Only a few days after Mrs. Laura Jackson's class joined Ms. Gentry's class for a distance learning program called  Out of the Blue!  Meteorites in Your Backyard, Abram Friesen used the techniques shown to find these!" Herndon replied, "This encourages me to see one of the powerful ways I hope we can  connect with teachers and students through distance learning." Gentry added, "Thanks to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History for enriching the learning environment for Acton Elementary School in Granbury."

Abram Friesen found these meteorites using techniques learned in a content enhancement program delivered via interactive videoconferencing from the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Gentry said, "The kids were really impressed. It was our first distance learning experience and we plan to do more next year."
